Finish failures often originate below the finish. Adhesion, cracking, staining and delamination can be symptoms of moisture, movement, incompatible primers/adhesives or weak substrates.
Materials & Finishes
Finish selection is the matching of substrate, environment, performance, appearance, installation method and maintenance regime. A visually similar material can behave very differently under moisture, UV, abrasion, cleaning chemicals or thermal movement.
Read the discipline visually, then go into the engineering detail.

What this activity is
Materials and finishes include surfaces visible to the user—stone, tile, timber, veneer, laminate, paint, metal finishes, wallcovering, fabric, glass and specialist coatings—as well as concealed substrates that determine whether those finishes stay stable.
What to expect
Expect material selection to balance appearance with fire performance, moisture, abrasion, cleanability, slip resistance, dimensional movement, VOC content, lead time and repairability. A sample board is not enough for high-risk finishes: mock-ups often reveal joint size, lighting effect, grain direction and workmanship issues that small samples hide.
Understand why the system behaves the way it does.
Coverage/consumption must include substrate roughness, waste and application loss rather than theoretical area only
Thermal/moisture movement = material coefficient × dimension × condition change where applicable
Joint width and movement accommodation must be designed for the selected material and substrate
Natural materials require selection criteria beyond colour: stone porosity/veining, timber grain/moisture, veneer flitch sequence and metal finish batch consistency all affect the final appearance.
Mock-ups establish workmanship standards and also reveal how joints, edges, lighting and adjacent materials interact at full scale.
Six progressive stages from preparation to verified handover.
