01 · SYSTEM OVERVIEW

What this activity is

Shop Drawings & BIM Coordination overview drawing

What this activity is

Shop drawings are contractor / fabricator documents that convert design information into executable details. They bridge the gap between intent and site reality, and can include general arrangements, sections, details, reflected ceiling plans, joinery fabrication, MEP coordination and builders-work drawings.

What to expect

Expect shop drawings to add construction detail rather than merely redraw consultant drawings. They should show actual sizes, levels, materials, joints, supports, access zones, interfaces and references. In congested projects, coordinated drawings or BIM models should identify clashes before materials are fabricated or work is installed.

01Start from current IFC/design documents and site-verified dimensions
02Use coordinated datums and reference grids
03Show sections/details at interfaces, not only plans/elevations
04Link material submittals and schedules to drawing tags
05Clash-check models before issuing coordinated drawings
06Update approved changes into as-built records
02 · ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS

Understand why the system behaves the way it does.

01

Coordinate tolerance chains at interface details rather than dimensioning from multiple independent finished faces

02

Fabrication dimensions should be derived from controlled datums; avoid scaling dimensions from PDF drawings

03

Model clash clearance = physical clearance + installation tolerance + access/maintenance allowance where required

Shop Drawings & BIM Coordination engineering fundamentals
01

A drawing is buildable only when a fabricator or installer can execute it without guessing. Add the sections, enlarged details, fixing information and schedules needed to remove ambiguity.

02

BIM clash detection is a filter, not engineering judgement. Soft clashes, access envelopes, sequence conflicts and performance requirements can remain even after hard clashes are cleared.

03

As-built information should record the installed condition and approved deviations; simply stamping the last shop drawing “as built” is inadequate if site changes were made.

03 · EXECUTION WORKFLOW

Six progressive stages from preparation to verified handover.

Handover / maintenance

Keep editable source files and final PDFs in the project record

Drafting Model Setup technical drawing
STAGE 02

Drafting Model Setup

Confirm dimensions and existing conditions that affect fabrication / setting out

Engineering intent

Dimension from stable grids / datums; avoid chain dimensions that accumulate error

Inspection / hold point

Failure to avoid

Fabricating from unapproved or superseded revisions

Handover / maintenance

Update as-builts after authorised modifications

Discipline Coordination technical drawing
STAGE 03

Best practice

Keep approved drawings accessible at the workface and remove superseded copies

Failure to avoid

Failing to record approved field changes for as-built issue

Handover / maintenance

Keep editable source files and final PDFs in the project record
