01 · SYSTEM OVERVIEW

What this activity is

Joinery & Woodworks overview drawing

What this activity is

Architectural joinery uses timber, plywood, MDF, particleboard, veneers, laminates, solid surface and hardware to manufacture fixed and loose interior elements. Factory control is important because moisture, machining accuracy, edging, adhesive application, sanding and finishing directly affect durability and appearance. Joinery must also coordinate with electrical points, stone, mirrors, metal trims, appliances and ventilation gaps.

What to expect

Expect most high-quality joinery to be engineered and fabricated off-site after a precise site survey and approved shop drawings. The client should approve material samples, veneer direction, hardware, edge details, colour and sheen before production. Site installation then becomes an assembly and alignment exercise rather than improvised carpentry.

01Start from fully dimensioned shop drawings and verified site openings
02Control timber/board moisture and acclimatisation before machining
03Define veneer grain direction, matching method and panel sequence
04Translate approved drawings into cutting lists/CNC data without losing tolerances
05Choose hardware by door/drawer mass, geometry and cycle duty
06Finish and protect components before delivery where the specification permits
02 · ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS

Understand why the system behaves the way it does.

01

Moisture movement is anisotropic: tangential movement is normally greater than radial movement; solid timber details must allow movement across grain

02

Tolerance stack = Σ component tolerances along the functional chain; critical clearances should be allocated, not left to chance

03

Panel yield (%) = net component area / gross board area × 100; add kerf, grain direction, edge defects and pattern matching before ordering

Joinery & Woodworks engineering fundamentals
01

Working drawings are a quality-control system, not decoration. A manufacturing detail should communicate finished dimensions, material, grain direction, edge treatment, hardware drilling, jointing, tolerance and reference datum without relying on verbal interpretation.

02

Engineered panels are dimensionally more stable than solid timber but their cut edges and fixing zones remain critical. MDF/particleboard exposed to water at unsealed edges can swell irreversibly; wet-zone details should use appropriate substrates and sealed edges.

03

Veneer selection is visual engineering. Book match, slip match, reverse slip, crown/quarter grain, flitch sequence and panel orientation must be agreed before pressing because the pattern cannot be corrected after the veneer is bonded and finished.

04

CNC accuracy does not compensate for wrong data. Site verification, datum control, tool diameter compensation, panel thickness, drill depths and hardware boring patterns must all agree with the approved model/drawing.

05

Finishing is a system: substrate sanding, stain, sealer, intermediate sanding, topcoat chemistry, film build and curing conditions affect colour, adhesion, gloss and repairability. Always follow the selected coating manufacturer’s system.
