Sound isolation vs acoustic treatment

Isolation limits sound transfer between rooms; treatment changes sound behaviour inside the listening room. A cinema may need both, but they solve different problems.

Mass–air–mass and resilient decoupling

Separated linings create a mass–air–mass system. Performance depends on lining mass, cavity depth, decoupling, absorption and airtight detailing. Rigid bridges and unsealed penetrations can bypass the intended system.

Low-frequency behaviour

Small-room bass is dominated by modal behaviour. Seat and subwoofer locations should be chosen with measurements and spatial response in mind rather than by symmetry alone.

Reflection, absorption and diffusion

Early reflections affect clarity and imaging; absorption controls decay while diffusion redistributes reflected energy. Treatment should be designed to a target acoustic response, not applied randomly.

Doors, penetrations and flanking

Isolation is frequently lost at doors, seals, ceilings, structure, ducts and service penetrations. Continuous perimeter sealing and coordinated service details are critical.

HVAC and equipment noise

Cinema HVAC must satisfy both thermal comfort and low background noise. Air velocity, diffuser selection, duct breakout, fan vibration and plant location require coordinated treatment.

AV pathways and rack design

Plan power, data, speaker, control and video pathways before closing walls. Provide accessible routes, separation where required, ventilation and service space around racks.

Projection and viewing geometry

Screen size, viewing distance, projector throw, lens shift and sightlines must be resolved together with speaker placement and room geometry.

Commissioning

Final performance depends on measurement-based setup: speaker levels, delays, crossover, subwoofer integration, equalisation, image geometry, control programming and a documented client handover.
